One of the hardest things that we can do as parents is to model the behavior we want to see in our kids. We want them to be loving, kind, yet find their own personalities and way in life. Due to the media attention from Delaney’s Tweets about our texts, a friend decided to tackle this subject with me on her blog mommy in SPORTS. She asked an important question, how do we instill kindness in our children?
In the article, I share three keys to kindness that have been important in my parenting journey. Here’s an excerpt:
Gratitude – The first thing that comes to mind is gratitude period. In the good times, it’s taking the time to recognize what’s good and acknowledging that with each other. I text Delaney when she’s having a tough day, “What are you grateful for today?” I told her once that I was feeling grateful for her. When you start from gratitude and realize the blessing that these kids are, and the amazing things that they teach me – it’s the difficult times that it’s easier to be confident and handle what’s going on.
And to be clear, to me grateful means full of the greatness of God. If I recognize every moment and every life is full of the greatness of God, how can I not be positive?
